Why We Focus on Mosquito Larvae

When most people think about mosquito control, they picture sprays, zappers, or traps that go after adults once they’re already buzzing around. But by that point, the problem is already in the air, literally. At New Mountain, we’ve spent years looking further upstream: at the water, where mosquitoes begin their lives.

Mosquito larvae are actually the most vulnerable part of the life cycle. They can’t fly, they can’t bite, and they can’t escape their environment. By studying larval behavior in detail over the past 15 years, we’ve learned that this stage is the key to lasting mosquito control. Break the cycle here, and you stop thousands of mosquitoes before they ever take flight.

That insight led us to sound. Larvae are surprisingly responsive to acoustic signals, specific frequencies that mimic the cues they’re tuned to in nature. By targeting them with sound waves inside the Sirenix system, we disrupt their development and reduce mosquito populations without relying on chemicals.

It’s a simple shift in perspective: instead of chasing adults around with short-term fixes, we focus on larvae where the science is on our side. And it works.
